5Trouble-free, fast, quiet
By TechGuy
I've been happy with this drive for several weeks now. It is small, energy-friendly, silent, and very fast. Of course, it is a product for early adopters, due to the cost and the small size relative to normal hard drives, but the performance alone is worth it for some. If you are comfortable enough with a computer to either burn a CD from an .iso file or create a bootable USB drive, I strongly recommend you install the latest firmware version 1916 that Crucial recently made available on their web site. This firmware includes a few bugfixes and supports background garbage collection (useful for RAID configurations) and Trim support under Windows 7, which helps the drive maintain a high speed over the life of the drive. The drive has a 5 year warranty. The drive supports other operating systems, including Mac OS X, but works a bit better under Windows 7 and recent Linux versions, due to specific support for SSD drives there. Under Windows Vista/XP, Crucial provides a manual "Wiper" tool to help restore any lost performance over time. The Crucial specifications are basically accurate - using the ATTO Disk Benchmark, I can get a little over 200 MB/sec on writes and almost 250 MB/sec on reads from the drive. This measurement is taken after using the drive heavily for several weeks. Another suggestion is to disable the automatic/background disk defrag for this drive in Windows Vista/7. This feature is enabled by default in many installations. To disable it under Windows 7, for example, right-click the hard drive in My Computer, choose Properties, select the Tools tab, click Defragment, and turn off scheduled defragmentation. SSDs do not need to be defragmented, since there is no latency in accessing different sections of the drive, and a regular defrag will actually decrease the maximum life of the drive, since the writes to each storage location on the drive are (somewhat) limited. The downsides of a product like this are the high cost, fairly small capacity, and the fact that it is a fairly new technology for consumer PCs.

5New Life For My Old MacBook
By James E. Moede
I know that spending $600 for just a hard drive seems high. However, I feel the Crucial 256GB was a great choice for me. I have an "old" MackBook core duo notebook that was purchased in 2006. I replaced the 200GB hard drive with the Crucial 256GB SSD and what a difference. My MacBook now boots in about 1/3 the previous time and applications seem to load instantly (no more bouncing on the dock). I also run Windows on my MackBook and it seems to perform better also.I did have one moment of panic after installing the new SSD. I was booting from the new Snow Leopard disc and it did not see the new SSD as a possible installation location. I realized that the new SSD had not been formatted. The solution was to run the disk utility on the new Snow Leopard disc and the problem was solved.Overall, I am very satisfied with the Crucial 256GB SSD and Amazon. I anticipate getting another couple of years out of my MackBook, so I think $600 was a value for me.

5successfully upgraded my MacBook Pro 17" 3.06GHz Mid 2009
By Giovanni Azua
First off I highly recommend SSD Crucial 256GB. It is really a great product and upgrade. I have been heavily using my system with the new drive for more than a month already and the improvement in performance is really amazing. Blazing fast!Last year I bought a new MacBook Pro 17" 3.06GHz Mid 2009 with 4GB RAM and the SATA 500GB 7200rpm drive. Back then I confess I had no clue what SSD was. I had very high expectations though:1) Running Matlab and R projects e.g. machine learning, image processing2) Photo editing: processing large digital raw files using Nikon Capture software3) Software development in Java while running database instances e.g. Postgres4) .NET Windows development using Visual Studio 2008 on Windows XP over virtualization with Parallels Desktop 5.x5) Gaming on Windows XP over virtualization with Parallels Desktop 5.x6) running build scripts from Linux Fedora over virtualization with Parallels Desktop 5.xWith the original configuration I was able to comfortably achieve 1) and 3). I was also able to run virtualization i.e. 4) 5) 6) but sub-optimally, overall the system would become slower and get completely stuck from time to time e.g. switching back and forth between Mac and Windows XP. I ran benchmarks on the Windows XP installation over Parallels using PassMark PerformanceTest and my system scored around 800. I searched for a system similar to mine on the PassMark database and voila! there was the same model as mine but with the only difference of having a SSD. That system had a score of 1150 i.e. roughly 40% faster than mine so that was it :)))I bought the Crucial 256GB drive last February as soon as the price dropped below 650USD. The drive arrived neatly packaged and the installation was straightforward. There was only one small inconvenience ... the drive does not come with the screws you need in order to mount it on the MacBook Pro. I had to use the ones mounted on my old drive but this was painful because they would not fit perfectly so there was some forcing it in a bit. I recommend you buy the right SATA screws that will fit the Crucial drive before mounting it on a MacBook Pro. From the software prospective and unlike many of the suggestions on internet I used Time Machine to restore my system and it took around 2 hours. After the upgrade, this is really a monster machine :) it really feels so. Every software would start and run several times faster, you would not only feel it but it is also quantifiable e.g. I ran again the PassMark PerformanceTest and got the higher score of 1200. Before I was using the Mac OSX Hibernation mode "hibernatemode 3" and the start up was slow almost comparable to that of a fresh booting. After the upgrade the wake up from Hibernation was much faster but specially the fresh booting time is now a few seconds only.I have always had excellent experience with Crucial products. I also researched a lot before doing this upgrade and the Crucial 256GB was by far the best choice. I am really very pleased with it.
