By W. Mayhew
There aren't many choices when it comes time to upgrade the IDE PATA solid state hard drive in Dell or Asus netbooks with 50mm size SSD drives. It is pretty much generic or the Pro IV series of SSDs from Runcore.I read reviews of generic SSDs and it seemed to be a maybe yes, maybe no in successfully installing and getting the generic model to work properly.Runcore is one of the few vendors that specifically states thier 50mm size PATA drive is optimized for use in the Dell Mini-9 (the one I have) and several other Dell or Asus models. The SSD arrived very quickly from the seller and was well packaged by the seller and also well protected and nicely presented in the packaging from Runcore. A really great feature is that Runcore packages a screwdriver, plastic case and a USB cord with the SSD. This is something you won't get with a generic drive which would be just a ZIFF board in a pastic bag. The purpose of the enclosure and USB cable is to make it easy to clone your netbook's original SSD to the new Runcore SSD.The Runcore SSD is pre-formatted and loaded with True Image Home 2010 software from Acronis for backup and cloning, plus some manuals in PDF format. I found the hardware manual pretty lacking in detail, which is why I rated this product four star instad of five. The hardware itself deserves a five star rating. If you've worked a little on computer hardware, despite the skimpy manual, it should be easy to figure out what to do. Mount the Runcore SSD in the enclosure and copy the software from the Runcore SSD to a bootable medium such as a formatted USB stick on which you already have DOS. Next, run the cloning software and have a cup or two of coffee. When it is done, swap the Runcore SSD into the netbook, and boot up with your new big Runcore SSD.I did not use the Acronis software because I already have Norton Ghost 2003 set up on a USB stick, and I am comfortable using that. Ghost had no problems detecting both the Runcore and the original SSB and it was simple to tell Ghost to do a disk-to-disk clone. Ghost kept the Dell diagnostic partition and expanded the NTFS partition to the remainder of the Runcore SSD. All in all, it was a pretty easy job for somebody with a little hardware savvy and would be within reach of neophytes too.I haven't benched the exact performance of the Runcore 64G SSD, but it is a snappier performer than the original dinky 8G SSD that came in the mini-9. I don't expaect the mini-9 to be a barn burner regardless of what the SSD is, so I am happy that the result is sold performance without any blue screens, lock-ups or starnge freezes that you'd probably get with a generic drive. This is a nice product and I recommend it as a must-have upgrade for anybody that wants to get full benefit from a netbook that originally came with a much too small SSD from the factory.

By Jessica Glenn
I primarily use my Dell Mini 9 for business while I am traveling (running a vLited version of Windows 7 on the netbook) -- suddenly I found I was out of space on the old 8 GB harddrive that came with it.I bought this from Hot Deals 4 Less through Amazon. When I received the unit I was very hesitant to continue since there were a few misspellings on the box ("Soild"?) so I thought this might have been a Chinese knockoff of the Runcore drive. Since I needed the drive urgently, I went ahead and installed it anyway despite my misgivings. There isn't much documentation on the installation inside of the package, but I was able to figure it out. It came with Acronis True Image. I installed the Acronis software as provided, and then ran it to clone the main disk to the new harddrive. It worked flawlessly. After installing the new drive, it worked perfectly, exactly like the old system (just with much MUCH more space). I used this as I was traveling and didn't encounter any errors or problems with the computer after that. It's been about 2-3 months after the installation and the netbook is still running great -- no problems at all. The performance is slightly better than with the old drive, but not by much, but the space increase makes this a must-have purchase for anyone wanting to upgrade their old Dell Mini 9.One nice thing is that it comes with an enclosure for your old drive so you can use your old drive as an external USB drive. Great touch, now I have a little 8 GB external USB drive.
