By Bill Schoonmaker
Received the ReadyCache SSD today in the regular UPS Mail. It was in a plain paper package but inside there's professional packaging with a Sandisk box. Inside the box you get the SSD itself, a bracket, a set of screws, a sata data cable and the instructions with the activation key for the software. Installation wasn't the easiest thing in the world but that is primarily due to owning a Dell XPS 8100 desktop. They make it so hard to add things to these boxes that it took me about 45 minutes to finally get it right and even then it is sort of rigged. I ended up not using the bracket and just mounting it above the existing hard drive because neither of the available power cables were long enough. I suppose I could have purchased an extension but then I would have had to wait to try it out. After installation I booted up and Windows 7 immediately recognized the drive. Was surprised it didn't show up as a drive letter so it must be formatted differently than normal. Anyway, the software was about 133 megabytes so after download I ran through the install which went through without a hitch. Asked for a reboot after and then enabled my activation code and was ready to go. Didn't immediately notice much improvement but that really makes sense to me. You see, this thing caches frequently used files as you use them. Basically you'll want to restart your computer again after enabling cache so those files get in there and then once back up you'll want to run all your normal software to cache those things. After running through 2 reboots and then running outlook, word, excel, firefox, itunes, steam and a few other frequently used applications I'm using close to 7gb of the available roughly 30gb.The good news, the computer seems MUCH snappier now. Outlook starts almost instantly. Itunes takes only a few seconds (as opposed to 10 or so) and boots are faster as well. It seems this thing does what it advertises which makes me VERY Happy. This 2 year old aging XPS now has new life and should suit me well for the next couple of years. The only fear is that if I decide to go to Windows 8 what then? Will Sandisk support it and when? Right now it is only supported in Windows 7. I also am not sure whether it is 64 bit or 32 bit. My guess is 64 bit because it installed into Program Files and not Program Files (x86).Anyway, for $50 I am extremely happy so far. No problems with it at all so far and the system even seems a bit quieter because the drive is not churning all the time. I should add I have 8 gb of memory in the system and have a LOT of stuff installed. I'd suggest giving this thing a try because spending an entire day or two putting everything onto a new SSD didn't sound like a lot of fun to me.

I also did not like the activation code, but it wasn't a big deal. The software you install monitors your most used programs and then caches them onto the SSD. This caching process is a lot like Intel's Smart Response Technology, which comes with the ZX8 motherboards (possibly others, I'm not familiar with them). I have a ZX8 motherboard, but went with this product anyway. So far, it's working fantastically.Installation is a cinch. Just mount the SSD onto the bracket, then put the bracket in an existing slot in your tower. Easy. On the first go around, I forgot to attach the power cable. Braindead moment for me, I guess. So, don't forget that. The package it arrived in was totally weird, though, never seen one like it. It was a strong, brown paper package that the post office (I'm assuming, to save space) folded in half and put a rubber band around it. Nothing to prevent one from buying the product, though. It is well worth the $50 I threw down for it. All in all, a solid four stars.

By Dr. Bojan Tunguz
I've received this Cache SSD through Amazon's Vine program, and it turns out that this product is different form what I had expected it to be. So let me start this review with a couple of things that this SSD is not, so there is no confusion if you are considering buying it.1. This is NOT a regular SSD that can replace any other hard drive. The purpose of this SSD is to act as a cache in tandem with your existing hard drive.2. This is NOT a product that is compatible with all computers and/or operating systems. This is a product designed to work only with Windows 7 machines.Once I got over the above limitations, though, I was able to install it on my old Windows 7 PC, which I've been using as a media-center PC for some time. That machine has been acting slower and slower over the years, and even with an upgraded memory it was becoming painfully slow to use. This was particularly true with launching and closing of the various programs, and especially with the boot up time. So I welcomed a chance to improve my old computer's performance.Installing this SSD is relatively straightforward, although you should be comfortable opening up electronic devices and fiddling with screws and cables. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, I recommend you ask for help from a computer-savvy friend or a relative. The SSD fits perfectly into an existing SATA HD slot.Once you install this SSD you will need to download additional software and activate it with the activation code that came with this package. This is all a very straightforward process, although in my opinion requiring activation code is an unnecessary step.Once the software is installed and working, it will take a few restarts and re-launches of your most accessed applications before you start seeing some improvements. However, the improvements are definitely real and substantial. I don't know about the factors of 4 or 12 that are claimed on the package, but my experience has been very positive. If you were looking to boost your old Windows 7 machine then I would definitely take a look at this SSD Cache. It will make your computer feel relevant for at least a couple more years. For $50 that is a great proposition IMHO. However, if you were looking for a more versatile SSD I would definitely look for other options.
