By Stephen W. Templar
Introduction:I run an old Toshiba Satellite U205-S5067 in full original factory configuration. She spins an old Hitachi 5400rpm 160gb hard drive. She has a boot sequence similar to that of the Millennium Falcon... slow and unpredictable.Sometimes she boots really fast, like three minutes from bios password to fully operational. Sometimes she boots slower than that, like five, or more, minutes to operational. Average boot time is certainly over four minutes. Usually I get to the login screen and then go get a drink to avoid the endless waiting. If I had to wait for my little machine to save me, Darth Vader would have me for sure. The Fix:Introduce a little techno miracle called SanDisk Ultra Plus SSD. The drive is so light that I actually thought the package from Amazon was empty until I opened it. Gladly, the drive was inside the package.I used the Apricorn SATA Wire and Cloning Software Upgrade Kit to clone my old hard drive in less than two hours. Then I swapped out the old Hard Drive for the new clone SSD. The result is a computer that boots from bios password to fully operational in less than one minute. Every single time!I cannot begin to describe how much faster my machine is at everything it does. Boot time, web browsing, software start up, etc.: everything is faster, much faster. Thanks to this little techno miracle I feel certain that my stolen plans for the Death Star will now remain safely in our rebel hands. Thank the Maker.PS If you are not a techno-geek super nerd: This is a really really good hard drive. It has no moving parts and it's really fast. Buy it.PPS The SATA Wire with Cloning Software made this upgrade a simple, almost plug and play, operation. Highly recommended.

I've heard and read about how fast a Solid State Drive will perform, especially on startup. I tried this drive on my 5 year old Sony Vaio laptop. Before install, I timed the startup and shutdown (Windows 7).power on to login screen = 1:04password entry to desktop = 26 secondsshutdown = 16 secondsAfter SSD install:power on to login screen = 25 secondspassword entry to desktop = 3 secondsshutdown = 3 secondsThe windows "Experience Index" for the drive is 7.8 (on a scale of 1.0 to 7.9).I think anyone would agree that speaks for itself. Now I have a different problem, I have to buy one for my other computer..

About a month ago now I installed this drive in my aging HP DV6000 1.6g AMD Turion64 X2 - Win XP Pro/Linux dual-boot - 2 gig RAM/128m to video - dual displays; replacing a 160gig 7200rpm platter. Install was a breeze, no different then a standard drive, plenty of room in the bay. This drive is so thin it ships with a spacer shim to ensure the drive doesn't move around in the bay. When you receive the drive, be prepared, you'll think the box must be empty, the drive weighs mere ounces. So how did it improve the machine. Boot times were a bit better then halved. About 5 minutes with the platters cold start, about 2 minutes with the SSD. My machine has 7 USB 2.0 devices attached so it has to init them all one by one at boot time however without the USB devices I can have a working desktop in under 60 seconds. This machine has a SATA 1 interface as well, I will never realize the speeds the drive can produce. So how did the apps respond. Outlook took 2-3 minutes to load from cold start, now, max 30 seconds, usually less and a lot of that time is waiting for POP3 traffic. App's like Word or Open Office that took a minutes to open cold start are now almost instantaneous, no more than 5 seconds, usually less. Firefox cold start, click the icon, bang Firefox with the 6 tabs I had open in the last session. It will do a Firefox update/restart faster now then it used to just open Firefox. Big improvement on all apps. The system runs cooler and anyone that owns a DV6000 knows about heat issues, running multiple monitors puts a lot of stress on the GPU/Southbridge chipset. Drive temp dropped 20ºF and overall box temps came down about 5ºF. If you are running an older OS like XP be sure to do some reading about optimizing your boxes settings, XP doesn't support SSD's natively. Failure to do so can shorten the drives expected lifespan considerably. Also consider drive size versus data size. SSD don't like to be run near full capacity all the time. I had about 100gigs of data, it would have fit on a 128gig SSD but it would have been cramped and again shortened the drives lifespan. Spend the extra $$$ for the larger one, in the end the drive lifespan will be much longer. Bottom line, this SanDisk Ultra Plus SS drive did not disappoint. It turned an aging sluggish machine into a pleasure to use machine. It was worth every penny at $159, although I see they've increased the price a bit, still a much needed boost in system performance. Took me nearly 2 years of watching SSD prices fall to make this move. It was well worth it. When the day comes that I upgrade to a new laptop, this drive will be a great enhancement to it as well. BTW, its an animal running Linux compared to the platter drive. This is a 5 year old machine. It's faster now then a lot of my friends newer laptops still using platter drives. You will not be disappointed with this SanDisk SSD.
