5OCZ Vertex 4 512GB SSD = big increase in system speed
By Upton O'Goode
I purchased this OCZ 512 Gb Vertex 4 SSD (Solid State Drive) to get better performance from my late-2009 Lenovo x201 laptop. My old hard drive was also a 512 Gb, so I didn't get more storage onboard, but with the OCZ upgrade kit OCZ Technology SSD Upgrade Kit With Acronis True Image HD Software CD (Windows), SATA III 6Gbp/s Data Cable (OCZSSDUPGDKIT1) (sold separately) or similar (consisting of a 2.5" external hard drive case, cable, and transfer software -- such as Acronis, downloadable fully functional from their website) my old drive now makes a nice 512 Gb external hard drive.Installation was easy. Before installing, make sure that your laptop is plugged in, and that you suspend any power-off settings (like hibernation mode). Then you can begin the transfer.First, you place the OCZ into the external hard drive. Then you connect the OCZ to your laptop with a USB or other cable. Third, you follow the instruction booklet provided by OCZ to format and partition the drive. Fourth, you start the Acronis software, which indicates that it recognizes the SSD and is ready to transfer all of the contents of the old drive to the new drive. Fifth, if your experience is like mine, the first time you run Acronis you will get an error message about a partition mismatch and the system will reboot. Sixth, after running Acronis the second time, it will run just fine. The transfer will take quite a while, after which Acronis will indicate that the transfer was successful. After the transfer is complete, you power down your system and remove the battery. Remove the hard drive tray from your laptop and remove the HDD from the tray (there are several small Philips screws holding it in). Put the SSD into the tray and secure it with the screws that you just removed, then place the hard drive tray back into your laptop, replace the battery, and power up your laptop. Your laptop should boot up right away, and your system will be running much faster than before. If your laptop doesn't boot, don't worry. All you have to do is swap the old HDD back into the laptop, boot it up, and begin the transfer again. After successfully installing your new SSD, you may want to make sure that your system is optimized for it. There may be several things you need to do depending on your operating system. These may include: 1) enabling a feature called TRIM; 2) disabling defragmentation (SSDs don't need to be defragmented, and defragmentation shortens their lives); and 3) disabling features like SuperFetch, Prefetch, ReadyBoost, and ReadyDrive. You can find out more information about optimization by doing a search with your favorite engine. After successfully installing my new OCZ SSD, I am very happy with the increased speed of my system. Bootup takes a few seconds. Internet pages load noticeably faster. And, my Dragon Medical voice recognition accuracy has increased.I recommend the OCZ 512 Gb Vertex 4 SSD for those people who want to breathe new life into an older laptop, or anyone who wants to maximize the performance and reliability of their computer.

5No need to look any further, this SSD is awesome.
By Eric R
Got this drive for $399 here from Amazon as the seller. Not sure why its now listed for $463. This is the OCZ Vertex 4 512GB.M. The M stands for Micron NAND. The other version of the OCZ Vertex 4 without the M has Intel NAND. There is absolutely no difference the benchmark speeds. You can see on the OCZ website for yourself. No reason to spend $100 more for the Intel NAND in my opinion. Sure it's a bigger brand name but Intel is partnering with Micron now and Micron NAND is found in many other very good SSD's.This Vertex 4 comes with the latest firmware 1.5. Don't freak out about all the old reviews and articles that talk about the Vertex 4 prior to July of this year. When the drive first came out the original factory firmware was holding back the write speeds significantly.. With 1.5 firmware I am getting consistent write speeds of 415mb/s and reads of 475mb/s on my early 2011 MacBook Pro 2.3ghz 13 inch with 16GB of Crucial RAM. This is with the SSD already filled at 50% capacity. I just upgraded from 8GB of RAM and I was getting the same hard drive read and write speeds with 8GB of RAM. One wouldn't expect hard drive read/write speeds to change by upgrading the RAM. FYI, the early 2011 MacBook Pro works great with 16GB of RAM even though the Apple website says 8GB is the max. Not true. I definitely see a huge difference when running a lot of memory intensive applications and for $70 you can't beat it.I moved my old fashioned spinning 500GB Toshiba HDD to the optical bay for added storage. I bought an optical bay hard drive caddy here on Amazon for $15. Works great. I also just bought the Crucial 16GB of RAM here on Amazon for around $75. Amazing. Just last year the combination of 16GB RAM and a top of the line 512Gb SSD like this Vertex 4 would have cost over $1200. Two or three years ago, it would have cost me twice as much as my MacBook Pro.With these upgrades, I have now created speed demon powerhouse that is totally on par with the new Retina Macbook Pro's that will cost you $2600 with this much RAM and SSD storage. Not to mention, I have an additional 500GB HDD for a total of 1TB of storage, half SSD and half traditional spinning drive. This 2011 Mac will be a fantastic computer for years to come with these upgrades. I wouldn't take a Windows computer of you gave it to me. Mountain Lion OSX is the best operating system ever made.My computer now boots up fully in less than 10 seconds with everything fully loaded and ready to go. Apps like iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes that used to take a minute or more to open, now open immediately within a few seconds. I can run dozens of apps at once with no slows down. I haven't seen that dreaded spinning rainbow colored circle since I installed this OCZ Vertex 4.Don't waste any more time shopping around or reading dozens of article and reviews as I did. I was also considering the Samsung 840 for $650, the Samsung 830 for $599, the Crucial M4 for $399, or the OCZ Vertex 4 with the Intel NAND for $499. For $399 this OCZ Vertex 4 512.M was an absolute steal and the best value I could have bought for my MacBook Pro. A lot cheaper than dropping $2500 for the a retina MacBook Pro with a comparable size SSD and RAM.

5So fast... works in early-2011 15" MacBook Pro!
By fyreous
I was blown away by the speed boost I got after installing this drive into my early-2011 15" MacBook Pro! I had already maxed out my RAM to 16GB, so I knew my hard drive was my last bottleneck to overcome. This drive gave such a noticeable boost in speed that I cannot believe I did not do this sooner! Huge applications, even the Adobe suite, now open in mere seconds! Programs install with lightning fast speed (Microsoft Office 2011 installed from a disk image in less than a minute)! I can honestly say I am thrilled with the performance.Installation was very easy for me, though I also repair MacBooks and other Apple hardware on the side, so take that with a grain of salt. Once I booted up, I chose to do a fresh installation of OS X Mountain Lion, and I would recommend the same to anyone who follows a similar process. Fresh installation gives you a chance to clean out your system and start anew. Plus, with a $20 external enclosure, you can easily hook up your old drive as an external unit, and transfer all your needed old backup files back to the laptop quite easily (again, I am a tech guy, so "easy" for me could be a little subjective...)After booting up (which took mere seconds), I installed the Chameleon SSD Optimizer software and used it to enable TRIM support within OS X for this drive, as well as make a few other tweaks. I have now been using the drive successfully for a month, and have no regrets. This thing is fast, it holds a ton of data, and I will be perfectly happy if I never have to use a mechanical hard drive again!
