5The future is HERE.

For many years, the largest bottleneck in computers has been their mass storage. While processor speeds, memory and buses have all scaled up to be able to support higher transfer rates, the lowly HDD has only modestly improved by comparison. So, in this day and age of multi-gigabyte application and OS installations, it starts to become very apparent that in order to achieve the kind of lightning fast performance we all dreamed of 20 years ago, the HDD has to go.Enter the Crucial M4 SSD... one of the least expensive, yet best performing of the current generation SATA3/6Gbps drives. To be fair, it's not the fastest drive on the market. But it does have a very stable controller and the firmware is fairly mature. I chose this particular SSD after doing exhaustive comparisons with its contemporaries and found it to be the best balance of price, performance and stability of the bunch. Installation on my early-2011 MacBook Pro was a breeze, with no surprises.Out of the box, my M4 was already flashed with the latest firmware version. Within 2 months of owning it, Crucial released yet another update. It flashed just fine, without having any data loss (which as I understand it, can be problematic with some other models). After that, a quick Google search yielded an effective procedure to enable TRIM support in OS X. Aside from those steps, installation of my OS and apps was unremarkable - roughly akin to installing a new hard drive, but MUCH faster. With my old HDD installed in a Firewire 800 enclosure, cloning it back to the SSD was a relatively simple affair. The difference in performance is readily apparent upon first boot - that is to say, the OS now boots within 15 seconds - and that counts the EFI firmware initialization process (which is roughly 1/3 of the wait time). And once it booted, I became spoiled by instant starting of all of my apps. I no longer wait for anything - and this is the first time since switching over to the Mac that I haven't missed having an HDD activity light. I no longer need to wonder about whether there's drive activity since every I/O process is pretty much instant. The only downside? I have to use a Windows machine at work all day long with traditional storage - and now I've found that I'm extremely impatient. So, in short, if you have the money and you value your time, an SSD is the only way to go. Just beware that you may spoil yourself and find that you want to upgrade all of the other computers you come into contact with!

4Some Notes for Dell Desktop Install
By C. MacPhail
.Very nice having a PC that's "snappy." No problems with the drive (now 6 months old). I'm very happy with it.Consider the bare version: Crucial 256 GB m4 SSD CT256M4SSD2 or the Crucial 256 GB m4 SSD with Data Transfer Kit CT256M4SSD2CCA, especially if on a price dip. You'll need a SATA cable (under $5) but the bracket included in this kit might be unnecessary, as noted below.Setting up a new primary drive can be a lot of work. Maybe these notes will save you some hassle.- - - Pricing - - -First of all, have a good laugh at those of us who paid $200 to $300. Prices are dropping fast. Use camelcamelcamel (google it) to see if the current price is at low tide, or temporarily inflated.- - -What Size? - - -I don't want to do another install 3 years from now. So, I'm glad I got the 256GB, which is 4x my current needs. All the big data (photos, music, video, backups) can go on hard disk (secondary drive), so 256GB may last forever.- - - Mechanical Install - - -1. Don't assume you need a "drive bay adapter kit" to work this 2.5" drive into your 3.5" drive bay. On my Dell Studio XPS, using an empty drive bay was the wrong plan. It goes much better nearer the current hard disk. Power connector reaches.2. I crafted some aluminum brackets while waiting for it to arrive. Hah! It weighs 2.5 ounces. Two thin strips of adhesive Velcro is probably the simplest and best mounting plan.3. SATA III cable. You need one. A "right angle" connection was going to be neatest, but that backfired. Angle went wrong direction. Straight connectors are probably best. Don't skimp on length. Stated lengths are theoretical tip-to-tip lengths.- - - Soft Install - - -1. The SSD firmware version is printed on the side. Make a note of it and check online to see if it's the latest (mine was).2. I read about "setting the BIOS to use AHCI prior to Windows install" but that was not an option on my circa 2010 Dell desktop. Apparently the already-set RAID mode covers it (My Dell was factory set to RAID even though drive is not RAID.)3. Windows fresh install. If you feel your current windows install has too much sand in the gears, now would be a good time to do a fresh install. You can download a fresh copy of Windows from Digital River. However, there will be a lot of steps installing all your hardware drivers, re-installing all your software, tweaking settings, etc. Software like iTunes needs special attention because the data needs to be exactly where it's expected. I found a pretty useful guide under "Blowing Away Bloatware" at the arstechnica site.- - - Summary - - -These are just a few tips. You'll need to google your specific questions and issues. Very little instruction or documentation is shipped with this drive.

5Very fast, but has a strange mounting bracket.

This is my 2nd Crucial M4 512 GB drive, and I absolutely love them. I just got this 2nd one today, and this is the first one I have with the 3.5" drive bay adapter plate. Since I just received the drive today I can't speak much about reliability yet, but I thought I would point out a few things I have learned.First, (and the only negative thing I can say) is that the plate holds the drive off-center (see product photo) -- to the extent that most typical hard drive screws that hold the bracket to the computer case by the sides will hit the side of the drive when tightened (this includes the screws that ship with the unit). To get around this I found (in my vast collection, and with luck) a very short screw that would not hit the drive. I prefer to use the screwdriver-less type of screws to hold my drives, but all of those were too long for this. If Crucial would have just centered the drive in the bracket there would be no problem at all. I recommend testing the screw depth and either look around the house or go to the hardware store to get some short ones that clear the side of the drive. I think the longer screws wouldn't really damage the drive so much as they would prevent a good, snug fit overall. There is basically no user manual that comes with the drive. I found that the drive needs to be placed upside-down in most desktop computer cases, and that the finer threaded screws are the ones that hold it to the bracket, while the course threaded screws (described above) hold the bracket to the computer case.Second, speaking to the people who have had difficulty with data corruption: it is very important to enable AHCI in the system bios BEFORE formatting or installing the OS. After that, do not try to plug the drive into another PC with the SATA controller set to IDE mode. This can nuke the data. USB should be fine, but be careful with the whole AHCI/IDE thing. As I understand it, AHCI is required by most systems for TRIM support, etc. on SSD's, but most motherboards have a default of IDE mode for SATA drives. I recommend a web search on this to learn about the benefits, risks, etc.My first M4 512 was put into a Macbook Pro laptop, and it has been running beautifully for the last 7 months (had to do some minor hacking to enable TRIM support in OS X, but that's a Mac thing). I believe Macs have AHCI enabled by default, so Mac users probably don't have to worry about the issue above.I can't bring myself to remove a star for the bracket issue, and besides, there are lots of cheap 2.5" to 3.5" drive adapter plates out there. If you are buying this for a laptop you don't need to worry at all about the bracket.Overall, this drive is fantastic.
