Product Description

The M5 Pro Series SSD continues to delivers the highest quality storage performance in the industry. Continuing with the legacy and award-winning performance of its predecessors, the M5 Pro SSDs are engineered to optimize consistent high performance, extremely reliable, and provide the highest data protection. Multi-Tasking and Ultra-High Performance with TrueSpeed The combination of the latest Marvell enterprise-grade controller 88SS9187 controller and the best quality Japanese Toshiba Toggle NAND flash creates M5 Pro with enterprise-class performance. It has the ability to consistently deliver random read / write speeds up to 94,000/86,000 IOPS and sequential read/write speeds up to 540/450 MB/s making M5 Pro suitable for use in a heavy workstation, server role, or Raid 0 configuration. Even under heavy loads the multi-core controller and exclusive Plextor firmware make the M5 Pro extremely fast, reliable and stable. M5 Pro SSD is engineered with exclusive firmware featuring TrueSpeed Technology, including Plextor’s proprietary Bad Block Management, Global Wear Leveling, and Instant Restore technologies that optimize performance. True Speed is designed to maintain M5 Pro’s high performance read/write speeds at like-new levels throughout the life of the drive. Enterprise-grade Double Data Protection Plextor’s unique double-data protection system protects the integrity and confidentiality of data. Data are stored with total confidence of accuracy through the newest 128-bit error correction code built in the controller and the unique data hold-out algorithm programmed with Plextor’s exclusive firmware. For data confidentiality, the M5Pro supports full drive encryption with an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256 bit algorithm using its US Government AES-validated Marvell controller.

5new M5P SSD 256 drive
By Walter W. Ware
Time will tell but with a 5 year warranty Plextor feels like they are putting thier $$ on the line which makes me feel good that this drive will last and whether a few bytes faster or slower is not as important as reliability - so what if it's 10 bytes faster if gets an error and blows up a OS that's much more important to me - this drive has ECC built into it and from the data they show on the site spec page it looks good and it has bulit in security with AES - I was using a Crucial M4 but I could not get the firmware update to load so I took it off line and replaced it with this drive - I didn't feel any speed difference but I feel better ---

2Hopeful, but disappointed
By Andy King
I had looked at five potential SSDs to use in my laptop (the Samsung 830, Samsung 840, Samsung 840 Pro, OCZ Vertex 4, and this one, the Plextor M5P). I really wanted the 840 Pro, but I just couldn't justify the additional cost. Based upon performance tests and reviews I selected the Plextor, and had high hopes for it. But my hopes were dashed, and after spending many hours trying to get the drive working I am sending it back. I have a Dell XPS L702X laptop, running Windows 7. The drive was found by the BIOS, but I just couldn't get it to be seen by Windows. I tried it in another (desktop) machine and there were no problems ... I was able to format the drive, which I thought might help on the laptop, but no luck - the drive wasn't visible in Disk Management. I tried the disk in both drive bays (the laptop has two bays), and updated the drivers on the laptop. I also spent about an hour with Plextor support (in a chat window), but this was completely useless. They told me that they would have "tier 2" support contact me, but after six hours I have still heard nothing from them. I have difficulty rating the drive, and I think it's somewhat unfair to rate it poorly just because it's not recognized in my laptop, but I'm not sure what else to do ... it indicates to me that there are compatibility issues, and I am reflecting the Plextor online support capability in this rating. I'd still recommend this drive if it's compatible with your machine! By the way, I'm going to get the Samsung 840 instead of the Plextor.

4Installed in a Mid-2009 MacBook Pro-- So far so good
By R. Reed
Like many, I wanted to breathe some life in my mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro (MBP). In the last year I maxed out the RAM (from 4GB to 8GB) and HDD (from 5400rpm to 7200rpm).I'd been on the fence with an SSD upgrade because I'd been considering a newer laptop, but a recent upgrade to a new DSLR (Nikon D700 -> D800) meant larger image files and required me to squeeze more horsepower from my laptop.Another reason for my hesitation in upgrading is my MBP is SATA II (3GB/s) and I knew I wouldn't get the blazing fast read/write speeds these newer SSD SATA III drives are advertising. But I figured any boost would be a huge improvement over my current speeds.I'd considered a Samsung 840 (consumer) 250GB drive, but Amazon was running a special on this Plextor so I pulled the trigger. If not for the price special and 6GB more storage, I probably would've stuck with the Samsung since I probably wouldn't realize the full advertised speed boost in this Plextor due to the SATA II bus limitations. The cloning process was very straight forward albeit slow due to having to use the slow USB 2.0 port (SSD in a SATA enclosure). You can do a search on the web for instructions on cloning your original drive (for free) simply using the OSX recovery process for your given version, or your favorite cloning software. With the SSD installed, read/write speeds hover over 200MB/s which is a little over 3X my old drive (60MB/s). Definitely short of the M5 Pro's advertised speeds (540MB/s read, 460MB/s write), but a nice improvement over my old drive. Working with large image files is definitely more tolerable than before-- very comparable to my workflow with my old camera and HDD.The most important thing for me in this swap was having a seamless user experience with the new drive. When I booted up, I had to log back into my Dropbox and re-enter my MS Office '11 product key. Everything else was set up as if I was still using my original drive (from what I can tell). For anyone with a SATA II connection considering an SSD upgrade, I'd suggest getting the most capacity for your money since you'll never be able to achieve the advertised (SATA III) speeds of the drives. Tom's Hardware did a test on SSD performance with SATA II connectors which makes that point: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sata-6gbps-performance-sata-3gbps,3110.htmlI hope this review helps anyone with an older MBP that's considering an SSD upgrade.
