Product Description

The S511 utilizes the new generation SandForce SF-2200 series controller, with native support for the SATA 6Gb/s platform. The S511 completely brings into play the revolutionary high-speed performance of solid state drives, embracing a new world of transfer performance. With read and write speeds twice that of SSDs using the older SATA II specification, the S511 reached 550/520MB read and write speeds respectively, with 4K random write speeds as high as 85,000 IOPS in real world testing. This means transferring a 5GB video file can be completed in as few as 15 seconds. In actual testing of Windows 7 boot speed, the S511 clocked an impressive 21 second system boot time, giving full satisfaction to the performance needs of power users.

5Fast little drive...but a firmware upgrade is critical
By Greg DeT
I purchased this drive as my primary OS drive for a Windows 7 64 bit install. The drive comes with a stripped down version of Acronis True Image so you can transfer your existing disk over to the new SSD. The Acronis program worked flawlessly. The Adata S511 SSD uses the latest SandForce memory controller and it is crucial that you upgrade the firmware on the SSD to the latest version. I would recommend printing out the firmware upgrade guide and following it step by step. My experience was when I went to upgrade the firmware it took a long time to find the SSD and then it took a long time to apply the firmware upgrade. My only complaint in the process is that it isn't really clear when the firmware upgrade has completed. Once the process has completed use the information in the upgrade guide to ensure that the firmware has actually been updated. If you follow all of these instructions then the drive should work perfectly. If you are trying to update the firmware and the updater is not working properly then make sure you have enabled AHCI in your bios and try again. If you have the old firmware on the drive and you do not update to the latest firmware you'll start noticing strange periods of inactivity where the computer just "hangs" for a few seconds and then allows you to do things again. With the updated firmware, this problem goes away. I have been running this drive for a few weeks now and it is zippy and fun to work with. Windows 7 boots in about 10 secs and I can be working in Google Chrome a second after that. Shutdowns are also quite fast.

5Fast, not as fast as they say, but still really fast
By James P. Garin
Don't buy one of these unless you do a bit of research as to how to best use one, but if you do, they can produce amazingly fast loads. SSD's in general and this one in particular are very, very fast storage, but they don't like to be used in repeated read/write situation (they have around 3,000 cycles before they burn out). However, load your operating system and some key programs, then redirect everything else to a standard hard drive and one has a screaming machine that should last a very long time.Wish I had gotten one earlier.
