I bought this to replace an old no-name external disk controller that consisted of a bunch of separate cables and a bulky laptop-style power supply. The old controller was limited to USB 2.0 and worse, had compatibility issues with a Crucial M4 SSD that kept Windows Disk Management from initializing the SSD and resulted in an unnecessary RMA.The Icy Dock on the other hand has been flawless so far. I haven't encountered any compatibility issues, the adapter is well-made and compact and can be used without the included small power supply unless you need to power a 3.5" hard drive. The USB 3.0 transfer speeds are noticeably better than with my old USB 2.0-based controller, making the drives the bottleneck. The only thing that would make the Icy Dock better would be another mSATA-style connector for use with Ultrabook SSDs, right now I'm using a SYBA mSATA-to-SATA adapter to work around that. I also wish there was a proper device name in the "Safely Remove Hardware" device list -- it shows up as "Usb production".I don't think there is anything better than the Icy Dock on the market if you need an external disk controller for migrating drive contents or troubleshooting. Highly recommended!

I bought this IDE/SATA adapter to read a few old hard-drives. I had the Cables Connect C2G / Cables to Go 30504 USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter (Black), but that failed after a few uses. The unit is nice and well constructed. I like that it has the SATA connections built in, and does not need additional wires. The power adapter is also straight forward with no additional power adapters. Thus if if it fails, you could easily find a replacement AC adapterDrawbacks? I had a drive from 1994, that the power adapter and the bus cable were too close together on the drive to be used by the ICY Dock.Pluses? IT has a three year warranty, it seems to be better made than the the 20$ competing versions. It supports hot swapping SATA drives, (conforms to SATA spec.)

I bought the ICY DOCK adapter so that I could make use of some of the older small-capacity hard drives I have laying around as back up storage units. So far, I have been quite impressed with its ease of use, and transfer speeds. My wifes computer has USB 3.0 and she was able to transfer a 1 gigabyte movie in 31 seconds. It works good on my USB 2.0 computer also but not nearly as fast. It's pretty cool to be able to just plug a drive in without having to reboot the computer. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to swap drives around.
